The speech-language pathologists (SLPs) at Columbus Community Hospital work with people of all ages who may have trouble speaking, listening, reading, writing, thinking and/or swallowing. These problems may be because of strokes; head injuries; head and neck cancer; vocal cord injuries or abuse; or diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis (MS) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Our SLPs are licensed by the state of Nebraska and credentialed by the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA). They have additional certification in Vital Stim™ therapy for people who have difficulty swallowing, and the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT-LOUD®) program for voice disorders caused by Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders.

In coordination with CCH’s radiology department, our SLPs also conduct modified barium swallow (MBS) studies to assist with the diagnosis of dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing).
Our SLPs provide treatment for the following conditions and injuries:

- Cognitive impairments
- Swallowing disorders
- Stuttering
- Voice disturbances
- Communication deficits
We have experience in the use of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) devices for significant communication disorders. These disorders could be caused by stroke, ALS, brain injury and laryngectomy.
