Biography
Kurt Kapels' love for science and medicine began with animals. He grew up on a farm near Creston, Nebraska, and spent much of his childhood caring for animals from birth to the end of their life. He eventually graduated from Lakeview High School near Columbus, and went on to medical school at University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Since 2014, he has worked as a hospitalist with Inpatient Physician Associates of Columbus and Columbus Community Hospital. He is board-certified in internal medicine and treats adult patients while they are in the hospital.
"Every day is a challenge," he said, "but each challenge provides an opportunity to get to know someone and their family, and to do our best to guide them through complex and often scary circumstances. Medicine is exciting and humbling, challenging and satisfying — all at once."
He says the most helpful piece of advice he's received involves working hard. "Some things in life are beyond your control," he said, "but the one thing you can control is your work ethic and drive. If there is something you want to accomplish, lay out a plan to meet that goal, one step at a time."
When he's not at the hospital, Kapels enjoys spending time with his wife, Morgan, his sons Henry and Kipton, and their dog. They like to travel and participate in many different outdoors activities.
Kapels is a die-hard Cornhuskers fan which, he says, has "led to some awesome highs and terrible lows in my sports lifetime."
