Free summer camp will inspire future healthcare professionals

(COLUMBUS, Neb.) – Young teens who think they might be interested in a healthcare career can participate in a whirlwind, one-day introduction to healthcare at Columbus Community Hospital. “Beyond the Scrubs” is for teens ages 13-15 and takes place on Tuesday, July 9.
The day starts at 8:30 with a light breakfast and check-in at the hospital’s main entrance. After participating in icebreakers, participants will tour the hospital and take part in an interactive overview — imagining the hospital as its own planet full of busy departments and vital roles. Activities such as “Who am I?” will help campers discover how different roles contribute to patient care and hospital operations.
Throughout the day, participants will rotate through short breakout sessions with real CCH professionals, learning first about non-clinical healthcare careers such as marketing, social work, finance and maintenance. After lunch, they will dive into learning about clinical fields such as nursing, respiratory therapy, radiology and laboratory science. Later in the afternoon, the group will visit the Columbus Fieldhouse and Wellness Center for a final set of sessions featuring physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology and athletic training.
The camp will wrap up with a fun team activity, snacks and a swag bag filled with goodies and information about hospital programs and volunteer opportunities. Pickup is at 3:30 p.m. at the Columbus Fieldhouse.
There is no cost to attend, and each camper will receive a free T-shirt. Space is limited and registration closes Thursday, June 20.
