(COLUMBUS, Neb.) – Adults who want to pursue a career in the operating room can get a jump-start on their journey with Columbus Community Hospital’s Surgical Tech Internship Program.

A certified surgical technologist is a member of the operating room team. They work alongside and assist surgeons, nurses and other members of the healthcare team throughout surgical operations.

“The surgical tech internship program is a great opportunity for anyone looking to begin a new career or make a career change,” said Melinda Allen, the hospital's employment and education coordinator.

In the program, participants receive personalized mentorship as they pursue their educational goals, working part time and gaining hands-on experience. The program also includes a commitment to join Columbus Community Hospital as a certified surgical technician after completion.

Kayla Gehring, the hospital’s director of surgical services, said one of the best ways the hospital can serve the community is by creating opportunities for people to build meaningful careers close to home.

“We're proud to offer a pathway into surgical services and invest in individuals who will help care for our patients and community for years to come,” she said.

Adult applicants interested in this internship opportunity will need to complete a full application, including a 500-word essay describing their interest in becoming a surgical technologist. Hospital leaders will carefully review applications and invite selected candidates to interview with the internship selection team.

Applicants accepted into CCH’s Surgical Tech Internship Program must be actively enrolled in prerequisite coursework and/or Southeast Community College’s Surgical Technology Pathways Program at the time the internship begins.

The application deadline is Aug. 21, 2026.
