(COLUMBUS, NEB.) – Columbus Community Hospital is proud to recognize two exceptional certified
nursing assistants: Arasely Calderon, CNA, and Marta Somera, CNA, are the newest recipients of the
Sheaf of Wheat Award. Both serve in the acute care unit and consistently demonstrate the compassion
and excellence this honor represents.

The Sheaf of Wheat Award recognizes staff members who exemplify CCH values in their daily work.
Compassion means striving to connect with each patient and ensuring their needs are fully met.
Excellence reflects the commitment to go above and beyond, caring not only for the patient, but also for
their loved ones.

Calderon and Somera were nominated for the award after providing remarkable support to a patient
and her spouse during a difficult weekend. The nominator shared how impactful their care was, calling it
a meaningful reminder of the important role healthcare workers play in offering comfort and strength
during life’s most challenging moments.

Calderon and Somera took intentional steps to ensure the spouse felt seen, heard and supported. They
offered reassurance, spent time listening and made sure he was as comfortable as possible while
navigating an emotional phase of his wife’s health journey. Their thoughtful actions demonstrated
genuine compassion and left a lasting impression.

“This small act of kindness deeply touched the spouse,” the nomination read. “He felt truly cared for
during a time when he needed comfort and support.”

Their dedication reflects the heart of CCH’s mission — to provide exceptional care that supports both
patients and families. Calderon and Somera regularly bring empathy, attentiveness and professionalism
to their roles in the acute care unit, and their actions represent the very best of our team.
