Swing Bed

If you or your loved one need short-term, skilled health care services, Columbus Community Hospital’s Swing Bed program is here to help. The program is designed for qualifying patients who are discharged from the hospital, yet have a continued need for medical care.

The goal of the Swing Bed program is to provide you with the best therapy and nursing care in the shortest time possible. We want to help you feel better so you can return to your permanent living situation as soon as possible.

Program eligibility

The Swing Bed program is available to qualifying patients — typically those who have completed a three-night inpatient stay. These patients no longer qualify for acute care services, but are often not ready to return home.

The program provides care for patients who may have undergone surgery, experienced trauma, had an acute illness, require a wound vac, or need extended intravenous (IV) therapy.

Patients may also qualify for the program because of a new diagnosis or medical condition that requires additional education.

Medicare, Medicare Advantage and additional health insurance plans are accepted on a case-by-case basis.

Our services

CCH’s Swing Bed program is designed to provide a quiet and peaceful environment, allowing you to get the rest you need so you can recover and return home.

The program comprises beds on the second floor of the hospital.

When you are admitted into the Swing Bed program, you receive the following benefits:

  • Around-the-clock assistance from skilled nurses and physicians. The  program includes 24-hour registered nursing coverage with a minimum of one nurse and one nurse aid available at all times.
  • A doctor who follows you in your recovery. Throughout your stay, the doctor and Swing Bed program staff work together to create an individualized care plan for each patient. They are able to perform lab draws and diagnostic testing without leaving the hospital, as well as administer IV fluids, antibiotics and blood products, if needed.
  • Activities.
  • Bedside shift report.
  • Weekly, interdisciplinary bedside care plan meetings with the Swing Bed team.
  • Healing Touch therapy with a trained staff member.
  • A wide array of rehabilitative services. Occupationalphysical and speech therapy are offered by seasoned experts. You can expect to work with the same therapists throughout your recovery process. All patients must be willing and able to participate in therapy.
  • Physical therapy offered as many as seven days a week, if needed.
  • Occupational therapy to help you build strength by working on activities of daily living. These therapists may also conduct a home safety assessment prior to discharge, if needed. This assessment ensures that your home is safe and ready for your return. Lymphedema therapy is also available.

Patients admitted to the Swing Bed program usually stay an average of 10 days or less.
