Columbus Community Hospital offers ai chi, an aquatic-based exercise class.
The class focuses on deep breathing, relaxation and slow, broad movements. The water provides a relaxing, supportive environment to perform specific exercises.
Ai chi is designed to improve balance, increase total body strength and decrease pain. It is beneficial for people of all ages and abilities, but participants must be able to enter and exit the water independently.
Read what one ai chi participant has to say about the class:
“I like everything about this program. I’ve had knee replacements on both knees, but about three weeks into ai chi, I now have better balance and I can walk better. I am totally amazed. You wouldn’t believe how much better you feel when you get out of a session … I just think ai chi is the best thing I’ve found so far. I think anybody who wants to just take a very relaxing type of exercise would love it. And if you have balance problems or walking problems, it will help.” - Gloria Rinkol, ai chi participant
Ai chi classes take place in a group setting, and the group meets once a week. Each ai chi group participates in seven class sessions. The class size is limited to 10 people.
Classes last approximately one hour and take place in the YMCA warm water pool at the Columbus Wellness Center.
