Columbus Community Hospital

Maternal child health

The process of childbirth is one of the most natural things in the world — and also one of the most overwhelming. You are excited for the new addition to your family, but also concerned about the unknowns of childbirth and everything that comes after it. Columbus Community Hospital is here to help.

We opened our new maternal child health department in 2021 so patients like you can feel more comfortable as you are undergoing this life transition. Many of the changes in the department help new mothers feel more relaxed with the process — such as our labor, delivery and postpartum rooms, which allow you to stay in the same room during your entire stay. The move expanded our department, nearly doubling its size from 10,200 square feet on the second floor to 18,400 square feet in the new location.

Our maternal child health department features:

  • Eight labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum rooms (LDRPs).
  • A surgical suite.
  • Four postpartum rooms.
  • A larger special care nursery with private rooms.
  • A guest waiting room.
  • Two nourishment centers for families.

When you stay on our unit, you receive care from a highly competent and skilled nursing team, including lactation counselors. Additionally, a group of certified pediatric hospitalists provide infant care as needed around the clock. Not only is the unit available for pregnant women and new mothers, but it also welcomes patients recovering from gynecological surgeries.

Our maternal child health department delivers about 600 babies each year and collaborates with local obstetricians and physicians to care for high-risk labor patients.

Our programs and services

CCH is pleased to offer some of the latest advancements in maternal and child health, as well as other special touches to make your birthing experience the best it can be. For example, when your baby is born, we play Brahms' Lullaby on our overhead paging system so the entire hospital can share in your joy.

Education and classes

Staff at CCH also strive to provide you with the education you need to best care for yourself and your new baby. The maternal child health department offers childbirth, baby care and breastfeeding classes and tours of the unit.

CCH's Bump and Beyond Prepared Childbirth class teaches expectant parents about:

  • The third trimester of pregnancy.
  • The labor process.
  • Comfort techniques.
  • Medical procedures.
  • Pain relief options.
  • Cesareans.
  • Postpartum care, including recognizing the signs of postpartum depression.
  • Newborn care.
  • Breastfeeding, and more.
