Majority of Nebraska hospitals now operating in the red

Nebraska hospitals, including Columbus Community Hospital, are facing financial difficulties due to rising labor, supply, and pharmaceutical costs, while reimbursement rates from Medicaid and Medicare have not kept up. As of the fourth quarter, 51% of the state's hospitals, and 59% of rural hospitals, were operating in the red. Columbus Community Hospital's operating margin, once steady at 14%, dropped to 0.6% last year, and the hospital is now $132,000 in the red. A proposed bill (LB1087) aims to provide $500 million in federal Medicaid funds to support struggling hospitals, potentially helping Columbus Community Hospital and others avoid service cuts.
