During National Stroke Awareness Month, Columbus Community Hospital emphasizes the critical importance of recognizing stroke warning signs. A stroke, often referred to as a "brain attack," occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts, leading to potential long-term damage. Quick treatment is essential, as the chances of a favorable outcome improve significantly within the first two to three hours. 

Dr. Mark Howerter, Chief Medical Officer, stresses the need for immediate medical attention at the emergency department if symptoms such as numbness or weakness on one side of the body, vision problems, confusion, balance issues, or severe headaches occur. The BE FAST acronym—Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, Time—can help individuals remember the key signs and the urgency of calling 911.
