Total breast care services for local patients
Columbus Community Hospital (CCH) recognizes the importance of breast health. From breast cancer detection to removal and reconstruction, CCH has a comprehensive team of medical experts who provide the highest quality care every step of the way.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, and CCH’s North Central Radiology team helps to detect cancer using cutting edge technology. The hospital’s 3D mammography system allows radiologists to identify tumors that may have gone unnoticed with a standard mammogram.
The system has many benefits over other detection methods, including:
- More accurate detection
- Earlier diagnosis
- Better detection in dense breast tissue
- Fewer false positives
If an abnormality is detected, North Central Radiology has the ability to conduct image-guided biopsies. The most common technique uses ultrasound to help locate and remove a tissue sample for examination under a microscope. It is less invasive than surgical biopsy, leaves little to no scarring and does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation.
Once the diagnosis of a cancerous or precancerous lesion is identified, CCH’s Columbus General Surgery is available to evaluate and treat a full spectrum of breast care, benign and malignant. The experienced surgical staff can examine and evaluate patients concerning breast pain, lumps, bumps and masses. If cancer is present, they can determine the severity of each case and advise the best course of action.
These surgeons are skilled in performing surgical procedures to remove breast cancer, such as:
- Surgical Biopsy
- Lumpectomy/Partial Mastectomy
- Full mastectomy
Those who undergo surgery as part of their breast cancer treatment may choose breast reconstruction to rebuild the shape and look of their breast. Columbus Plastic Surgery offers breast reconstruction options, including tissue expanders, implants and using the patient’s own tissues for reconstruction.
• Tissue expansion
- • Latissimus dorsi reconstruction
Either of these options may require multiple, staged surgeries to achieve an optimal result. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts anywhere from one hour to three hours. Results are highly variable.
