Pediatrician Providing Health Care and Hope
Every child deserves the best possible start in life, and that begins with having access to high-quality doctors and health care facilities. Pramod Shrestha, M.D., FAAP, board-certified pediatrician, believes that when we focus on children’s health, there’s a ripple effect of positive outcomes for children and their families, from health and happiness to physical growth, brain development and emotional well-being.
Dr. Shrestha joined the medical staff at East Central Health Department/Good Neighbor Community Health Center in 2016. He was born in Nepal and completed medical school and his pediatric residency in India. Dr. Shrestha completed the Pediatric Residency Program in 2016 at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in Brooklyn, New York.
As an intern at medical school in India, Dr. Shrestha learned how to practice holistic medicine, which means looking at the whole person when managing and preventing disease. Dr. Shrestha has a special interest in pediatric nephrology (treating diseases of the kidneys) and pediatric cardiology (treating heart defects in children). He also focuses on the importance of preventive care, including nutrition and childhood developmental milestones.
Inspired to Help Kids
Being able to intervene early to prevent or treat health problems so children can be healthy and active is what inspires Dr. Shrestha every day. “Seeing the happiness and smiles when we make a difference with patients inspired me to get into pediatrics. I knew it was the right place for me, where I can use my medical skills to help children and also provide hope for those who are facing challenges,” Dr. Shrestha said.
The moment that really shaped him as a doctor was during his medical internship when he was involved in the care of a 2-year-old child who had many serious health complications. “Her parents had nearly given up hope, but we were able to treat her condition and help her survive and thrive,” Dr. Shrestha recalled.
Teaming Up for Children’s Health
“During my residency training, I was surprised to learn that many Americans don’t have access to health care,” Dr. Shrestha said. “With Good Neighbor Community Health Center, I have the opportunity to take care of underprivileged children.”
In addition to providing preventive care and diagnosis and treatment of childhood illnesses, Dr. Shrestha makes referrals to specialists and helps patients with behavioral health problems. He also coordinates care with the team in the Pediatric Hospitalist Program at Columbus Community Hospital when he has a patient who needs hospital services. “We work hand in hand in the best possible way to help our patients,” Shrestha said.
Settling Down in Columbus
Dr. Shrestha and his wife appreciate the friendly atmosphere of Columbus and enjoy a good balance between personal and professional life. The couple loves traveling to destinations near and far ? from India, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand to Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. Now living in the Midwest, they have enjoyed seeing the mountains in Colorado and traveling to Chicago and Minneapolis.
Dr. Shrestha and his wife are excited to share that they are expecting their first child in November. “Getting ready for a baby is keeping us busy!”
