Advanced Orthopedic Technology Shortens Hospital Stay

Over 140 joint replacement surgeries are performed at Columbus Community Hospital each year. By utilizing the latest technology and most advanced equipment, CCH offers patients surgical options that can restore range of motion, overall function and return them to normal activity. Computerized navigation technology, in combination with the experience and expertise of Orthopedic Surgeons Dr. Richard Cimpl and Dr. Cody Harlan, provide patients with exceptional surgical care.

The Hospital’s Orthopedic surgery program covers a wide range of care, including some common sports related injuries, such as knee, shoulder, wrist and ankle arthroscopies, ligament reconstruction, such as Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). The list also includes elbow and ankle procedures, sprains, strains and fractures commonly associated with sports programs.

“All of the Hospital’s Operating Rooms are ‘electronically integrated’ which means that all of the minimally invasive surgical specialties, such as orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, and urology can use the same high-definiation electronic equipment,” states Cindy Ullery, Director of Surgical Services. “That equipment is located on an overhead boom system, eliminating any electrical cords on the floor and the need to move equipment from room to room. Set-up and clean-up are faster and easier because equipment does not have to be connected and disconnected between procedures.”

Ullery explains how the surgical equipment can be moved into place via the overhead booms, while monitors are easily positioned for optimal view by the surgical team. The nurse can control audio and video equipment through a command station via a touch screen panel. She also notes that the user-friendly technology implemented in each of the rooms augments the surgeon’s skills and helps the entire surgical team work more safely and efficiently.

Families of our orthopedic patients are also included in the surgical process. Each patient is given an I.D. number, which is tracked through the surgical process. Families are able to see the progress of the patient by watching the advancement of the I.D. number on tracking (viewing) monitors located in the surgery waiting area.

“Patients benefit from the improved quality and efficiency that the integrated Operating Rooms bring to the facility.” Ullery continues, “Drs. Cimpl and Harlan have the most advanced tools and an ergonomic work environment. But the most important feature is the benefit to our patients. They undergo shorter, less invasive procedures that are performed with the latest technology and equipment available.”
