Trauma Nurse Coordinator Named at CCH Shane Fleming, RN, NREMT-P, has recently been appointed Trauma Nurse Coordinator for Columbus Community Hospital.
Fleming has been employed by the hospital for 6 months and will complete his Bachelor of Science degree in May, 2008 through the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He received his Associates Degree in Nursing from the University of South Dakota and his Paramedic Certification and Associate of Arts degree from Northeast Community College in Norfolk.
Prior to moving to Columbus, Fleming worked in the Intensive Care Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney and for Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. in the Flight Division (Careflight) and the Emergency Department. Before moving to Sioux Falls, Fleming had spent 2 years with the Columbus Fire Department as a Physician Surrogate and Paramedic/Firefighter.
Fleming is a certified instructor for Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Medical Life Support, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support and provides education in the region on various emergent and critical care topics. He has served as instructor for two paramedic programs at Northeast Community College and Southeast Community College and currently provides education and consulting services for Emergency Medical Service organizations.
The Emergency Department at the hospital was designated a Level III Trauma Center in May, 2006 by the Nebraska State Trauma System. A level III Trauma Center must demonstrate the ability to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation and stabilization of injured patients in addition to providing emergency operations. Medical staff and personnel of a Level III Trauma Center must receive specialty training to resuscitate and stabilize trauma patients.
Columbus Community Hospital was the first Level III Trauma Center in the area. The Emergency Department sees an average of 750 emergency room patients each month, with approximately 3 percent of those as trauma patients. As Trauma Nurse Coordinator, Fleming’s responsibilities will be to promote optimal trauma care through clinical activities, professional and public education and through comprehensive quality assessment programs.
Fleming is active in the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department. His wife, Brandi, is a Science teacher at Columbus High School. They are the parents of two sons, Nolan (4) and Nicklaus (2).
