Celebrating National Home Health and Hospice Month During the month of November, Home Health and Hospice of Columbus Community Hospital will join other home care and hospice providers in celebrating Home Car and Hospice Month.
More than 11 million Americans receive home-delivered health care from home health care providers. “Caring for the sick, elderly and dying in their homes truly is a privilege for us,” said Laurie Swanson, Director of Home Health and Hospice at the hospital. “Home care professionals, volunteers and modern medicine make it possible for people to stay in their homes, regardless of their condition.”
Through technological advances, home-delivered health care has grown far beyond basic professional nursing and home care aide services. Columbus Community Hospital’s Home Health agency offers a wealth of nursing, physical, occupational, respiratory and speech therapies, counseling, dietary, laboratory, dental, optical, pharmacy, podiatry, x-ray, medical equipment and home medical supplies and personal care.
The hospital’s hospice care program treats the person instead of the disease, and focuses on the family instead of just the individual. Hospice emphasizes the quality of life instead of its duration and allows terminally ill patients and their families to experience the end of life together in the comfort and security of their home. Columbus Community Hospital’s Hospice program serves the counties of Platte, Colfax, Nance, Boone, Butler, Merrick, Polk and Stanton and provides nursing professionals and medical care to assist with the activities of daily living and bereavement counseling.
Home Health and Hospice services are covered by Medicare, some state-run Medicaid programs, third-party payers, or directly by patients and their families. Despite massive cutbacks in government funding, home care continues to be the preferred means of receiving quality health care services for millions of Americans.
