from Omaha in March, 1857, Dr. Charles B. Stillman became the
first physician to serve Columbus and the surrounding territory.
Since that time, the region’s strong commitment to quality
healthcare has inspired many to locate in this area. |

The origin of
a hospital in Columbus dates back to 1879. With the help of
a donation from John Creighton, The Poor Sisters of Saint Francis
of Olpe, Germany, opened and then expanded a hospital. At that
time, this facility was the first hospital between Omaha and
Salt Lake City. |

| In 1921, with
his sons and other area physicians, Doctor Carroll D. Evans,
Sr. established a second hospital. Originally called the Evans
Hospital, it was later purchased and renamed Columbus Hospital
and subsequently Lutheran Hospital. In 1964, the name was changed
to Behlen Memorial Hospital. |

After finding
it difficult to properly support and finance two hospitals,
a merger was completed in April, 1972 between St. Mary’s
and Behlen Memorial Hospital. With the exception of obstetrics
and accounting, all services moved to Behlen Memorial Hospital. |

In June 1975, the obstetrics and
accounting departments also moved. The hospital’s name
was then changed to Columbus Community Hospital.
In October 1981, the first physician tenant
moved into the hospital’s adjoining Physicians Clinic.
By the end of 1982, the original structure was filled and
an addition was authorized.
In May of 2000, Columbus Community Hospital
broke ground on a new healthcare campus located on 80 acres
in the northwest part of Columbus. A four story, prairie-style
building of 153,000 square feet was built on the location.
Management at Minnesota Corn Processors (now
A.D.M) stepped forward with an offer to coordinate a community-wide
effort to move the hospital’s equipment and patients
from the old facility to the new hospital. In August, 2002,
while continuing patient services, over 250 community volunteers
came together to help with the move. Numerous companies also
volunteered supplies and equipment for the effort. |

In September 2002,
the new attached one-story medical office building opened
its doors. The 40,000 square foot complex houses local and
visiting physicians, a pharmacy and the hospital’s lab.
The Medical Office Building is owned and operated in a partnership
of local physicians with Columbus Community Hospital.
The hospital retained ownership of the Physician’s
Clinic located at 19th Street. This location houses the medical
outreach services of Home Health/Hospice and Occupational
Health Services.
Our pediatric occupational, speech and physical therapy program,
Wiggles and Giggles Therapy for Kids, is located at 2108 13th
Street.
In addition to the physical therapy program on the third
floor of the hospital, Premier Physical Therapy is the hospital’s
clinic located at 3100 23rd Street which includes on-site
aquatic therapy as part of the rehabilitation program. Athletic
Republic, a sports enhancement program, is also located at
the same location.
Columbus Community Hospital
continues to provide compassionate and expert patient care
using the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art technology in
the area. The hospital’s commitment to excellence in
healthcare continues today in its new location.
